The leader of a large London gang, who escaped from prison, has been arrested in Moldova
Izzet Eren was jailed for 21 years in 2015 for firearms offenses and, while serving his sentence, was transferred to a prison in Turkey in August 2019.
Eren escaped from that prison a month later.
Commander Fiona Mallen said extradition proceedings were under way after Eren was arrested on Thursday in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova.
She said: “I didn’t have time to go back. ‘ In this case, an extremely complex investigation was launched to determine where Eren is, being exploited or a wide range of investigation opportunities and sensitive information, “according to MET.
Eren was caught in October 2015 with a loaded pistol and a machine gun in north London, while allegedly heading for an exchange of fire.
While being transferred from prison to Wood Green Crown Court, two months later, an attempt was made to evacuate Eren from the prison van. Police foiled the plot, but shot 28-year-old Jermaine Baker.
Last year, during an investigation into Baker’s deadly shooting, a public information note from the metropolitan police released what the officers thought about Eren’s past.
Officers described Eren as “an important member of a Turkish criminal group” and said that at the time of Baker’s death, he had returned to Britain in violation of a deportation order after being convicted of . drug trafficking”.
The gang, known as the “Tottenham Turks,” had a long-running dispute with rivals at Hackney Turks, police said.
They added that numerous shootings and murders took place in this dispute in 2009, both in London and in Turkey.
“Izzet Eren is wanted in Turkey for murder,” the document reads.
