Technicians complete a replica of an iron riveted bridge in the port of Mělník, which connected the Old Wastewater Treatment Plant in Prague-Bubeneč and Císařský ostrov.
Reporter Radek Duchoň went to the port of Mělník to produce a replica of the historic bridge
It is not easy to construct at all, among other things, workers must first make their own rivets and suitable devices.
But the steel bridge is almost finished. It remains to rivet only the last part. The structure is tied to a crane and technicians ride around it on high-lift platforms to reach the upper parts of the bridge.
“Production started by first having to produce rivets, of which there were a total of 14,000,” Ivan Bernát of Aerolux tells Radiožurnál, describing how hot rivets are installed and connected to parts of the bridge. There are also surveyors who inspect the most.
The company had to manufacture the machine for the production of rivets according to period documents, but with the current technology, ie with a hydraulic piston.
The former Polní dráhy bridge was built to transport sludge to a landfill. The bridge connected the left bank of the Vltava (on which stands the treatment plant building and the construction of underground reservoirs) with the Imperial Island across the Podbab Channel. It consisted of a simple lattice structure with an upper arch span of 34 m and a width of 3 m, placed on stone pillars of Cyclops masonry. The bridge was built in 1902 and served to connect the treatment plant with sludge fields, dirt dumps and other operating facilities on Císařský ostrov. The original 700 mm narrow-gauge track is preserved under the living surface.
Vladimír Sommer from Stavby mostů Praha CZ explains what will happen next with the bridge, which is almost completed: original position. “
In the future, they could take a visit to the Old Dry Cleaner as part of a train tour. He would ride right on this replica of the original bridge.
