Camping boom continues: growth expected again

Camping holidays are booming, especially since the pandemic, many have discovered this type of travel for themselves. Last year in Salzburg five percent more overnight stays were recorded than in the previous year. The camping industry is expecting renewed growth this year.
After Carinthia and Tyrol, Salzburg is a particularly popular destination for campers. The increased interest in the form of travel is noticeable at many locations in Salzburg. Despite the rather low temperatures, holidaymakers had breakfast this weekend at the Oitner campsite in Obertrum (Flachgau), played outside and enjoyed the holiday.
Feeling of freedom important factor for campers
An important factor for campers is freedom. “We went with friends once and we came to enjoy camping, we really liked it because you are so free. You can do what you want and you’re not tied down like that”, Hubert Tritscher from Lower Austria describes the camping feeling
Pandemic fueled camping boom
Only Austrians, Germans and Dutch people book a parking space in Obertrum. Many of them come regularly. Requests for places are also increasing rapidly here. “I think that during the pandemic, the desire for security and for one’s own four walls has increased for many. Many simply want to travel with their families and no longer need the extras,” says campsite owner Bernhard Oitner.
Booking situation already good
The booking situation in Obertrum is already good, there are always places for spontaneous people. “After all, camping is also about being spontaneous. Of course, the booking situation always depends on the weather, but when it’s nice everyone comes out and wants to go to the campsite,” says Oitner. The fact that camping is extremely popular again this year is already evident at the end of May at Lake Wolfgang.
