Abortion is also a vulnerable right in the Netherlands
It is also prohibited in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, abortion is still described in criminal law. As described in the Termination of Pregnancy Act. The right to abortion is therefore the exception and not the rule. That also makes it a vulnerable right in the Netherlands.
The lobby against abortion is getting bigger, bigger and more militant in recent years. They more often line up at abortion clinics in order to perform.
An unsafe situation can happen to anything
In the DOCS documentary Your sister, your mother, your neighbor, your friendn we follow abortion doctor Monique, that event can prevent a maximum pregnancy and that the abortion is difficult for everyone. She tells some of the hundreds of (anonymous) stories that have come into her treatment room.
These are stories that you often use, because many women do not or hardly talk about their abortion, out of shame or out of fear of the reaction of those around them. The arts for more openness, because everyone can keep it: ‘Your sister, your mother, your neighbor, your girlfriend’.
A difficult choice
Program maker Marije Schuurman Hess was always convinced that she would never opt for abortion. Until they ended up in a situation where she was overdue and having a child was not an option. It turned out she wasn’t pregnant, but it got her thinking. Armed with her recorder, she went in search of women who faced the same choice. A choice that is difficult enough, even without the government making a decision with your decision.
