Vienna 21-23 June 2022: Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. “#ItalyThink about it Come to Vienna”
The social campaign “#ItaliaRepensaci Come to Vienna” starts
From 21 to the June 23 will be held in Vienna there First Conference of States Parties (First meeting of States parties, 1 MSP) of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, TPNW), the first legally binding international instrument that prohibits the existence of their entirety, approved in 2017 at the United Nations in the United Nations and entered into force in January 2021. Currently the Treaty has been signed by 86 countries and ratified by 60. L Italy is not yet among them.
In view of this appointment, “Italia, Ripensaci” asks the Italian government to participate as an observer state and to be on the right side of the story. From civil society to governments, everyone is called to participate in 1MSP conference to discuss the nuclear threat and disarmament.
The Conference of States Parties is also open to states that have not yet ratified the treaty. For them it could be an opportunity to participate as observers and reconfirm the inhumanity of nuclear weapons. Switzerland, Sweden and Finland, which have not signed the TPNW, as well as Norway and Germany, members of NATO, have, for example, already announced that they will attend the meeting.
Now more than ever it is necessary for States to dialogue to avert the risk of escalation and take the path of total elimination of nuclear weapons.
Italy cannot be missing at this crucial event to support a vision of global nuclear disarmament. This would not jeopardize its position within NATO, as demonstrated by Germany and Norway who have already decided to participate.
Italy, therefore, has the opportunity to take a position that reflects the will of Italian citizens, as confirmed by a recent survey according to which the majority of Italian citizens believe that Italy must sign the Treaty and that US nuclear weapons should be removed from Italian territory.
“Italy, think again” is not intended to be a passive slogan or even less an act of negative judgment on the work of Italian institutions and international politics. On the contrary, it represents a proactive appeal to the contrary Italian institutions and representatives to promote a balanced and clear vision of human security in Italy.
