A subway station that looks like a spaceship
The station has an Omega-shaped floor plan. The structure is underground and 50 meters deep from the ground level, with an open atrium corresponding to the street level. Above is protected by a hangar cover of steel, glass and concrete of 50 meters in diameter by 10 in height. In the rectangular part of the Omega there are the service systems of the station, in the circular one of 33 meters, consisting of a single open space, there are 8 lifts in a central position and 4 helical staircases that screw in cantilever.
Altogether the whole station occupies approx 3 thousand square meters of surface. To build it, 200,000 cubic meters of excavation, 8,000 tons of steel and 70,000 cubic meters of concrete were required. It is estimated that the new infrastructure will save 47,536 kilograms of CO2 emissions per year. The station is part of the new section of the Line 1 Centro Direzionale-Capodichino.
