the flame of the war memorial burned again
This Friday, May 27, a ceremony took place in Avignon, as part of the National Resistance Day. The sub-prefect of Vaucluse Vincent Naturel, the mayor of Avignon Cécile Helle, as well as other local, departmental and regional elected officials were present on this occasion in front of the monument to the dead of the Rocher des Doms.
Two elected members of the municipal children’s council of Avignon read letters from resistance fighters from the Second World War, before the sub-prefect took the floor in turn.
A ceremony that continued with the traditional laying of wreaths at the foot of the war memorial. Finally, two former resistance fighters rekindled the flame in front of the stele with, in the background, the raising of veterans’ flags.
The date of May 27 for this national day is not due to chance since it refers to the first meeting of the National Council of the Resistance which took place on May 27, 1943, in Paris.
