Cyclists’ union and Gracq call for ‘disappeared policy’ | Brussels
Brussels RegionTen local groups of the Cyclists’ Union in Brussels, together with the French-speaking bicycles Gracq, demand more attention from the managers of the Brussels roads for the marking of the bicycle paths. They are virtually invisible in calculations.
According to both cycling organizations, the problem is visible throughout the Brussels Region. That is according to the Fietsersbond and Gracq. “The marking provides a clear demarcation on the road, and makes drivers aware of cyclists,” it sounds. “In busy traffic this is a minimum to safeguard the safety of cyclists. But the yield of certain markings has flaked off, so that the cycle path is not clearly visible.”
The cycle path on the Fosnylaan in Sint Gillis is a good example of the problem. At the marking with the small ring, towards the South Station, the marking has completely disappeared. “As a result, motorists who turn are barely aware that space is reserved for cyclists.” But that is also the case on other traffic arteries.
That is why the Fietsersbond and Gracq are asking the various road authorities to better maintain the bicycle paths. Brussels Mobility indicated that they will use a new plastic for marking that will last longer on the road surface.
The local branches of both cycling organisations, active in 12 Brussels municipalities (Brussels, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Jette, Evere, Molenbeek, Anderlecht, Auderghem, Schaerbeek, Uccle, Saint-Gilles and Ixelles), all knowing an overview of the disappearing bicycle markings on Google Maps and the Fix My Street app.
