Delays on the roads of Attica have now turned into a huge problem that needs to be solved immediately. Kimon Logothetis, Road Safety and Traffic Management Consultant of the Attica Region, spoke to star.gr and announced the ten reasons that have made the problem bigger. Let’s go see them in detail!

-We are in a period after the pandemic and the mobility is logical to have increased. “Two years of pandemic have kept us far behind in our days, in our needs and even in our way of life. “So there is an increased need to go out and meet these obligations,” he explained.

– Citizens’ trust in public transport has not yet been restored. “Passenger traffic is gradually being restored, it has reached 75%, however this is being done at a slow pace,” he said.

-The vehicle fleet in Attica has increased. According to Mr. Logothetis, during the pandemic, almost 200,000 cars were sold and record sales were recorded, but this increase is not proportional to the withdrawal of old vehicles.

-The population almost doubles during the tourist season. This month there is a strong tourist traffic in Attica. This means that we have tourist transfers from the port, to the airport and to the center of Athens, plus the tours.

-The mobility of students is peaking in view of the Panhellenic people. As Mr. Logothetis explained, May is the most difficult traffic month. The operation of the schools and the more intense mobility of the students (activities, tutorials, preparation for exams), as we are a breath before the Panhellenic Games, is an additional burden on the traffic.

– The fleet of city buses has increased. According to OASA data, the fleet of city buses was strengthened during the pandemic with 300 new vehicles that entered the road network.

-The increase in fuel prices pushes drivers to move slower while keeping speeds low.

-Negregation of vehicle maintenance during the pandemic increased the number of immobilized vehicles on the road network due to poor maintenance.

-Finally, there is an increase in cars parked illegally. The illegal stop is another reason that shows the traffic on the city streets.
