There is no stopping, Budapest gets another bike path
The cycle paths will be created one by one in Budapest, most recently in Újbuda.
New cycling routes may be created in the XI. district; the call for tenders for the construction works has already been published, the Budapest Transport Center (BKK) told MTI on Thursday.
During the preparation phase of the development in Újbuda, the planning aspect was to make it easier and safer to reach public and educational institutions, shops and the most important transport junctions by bicycle, he informed BKK.
It has been suggested that the developments will have faster access to the Ráczi Bridge or the Petőfi Bridge and its surroundings. In addition to the development of routes, the closer connection with public transport will also be helped by the B + R bicycle storage facilities planned at the intersection of Etele út and Tétényi út. The combination of public transport and cycling in many areas, such as Hamzsabégi út, Hamzsabégi park, Kopaszi-gát or Móricz Zsigmond körtér, has made the company quickly accessible.
According to the plans, bicycle lanes and cycle paths will be developed along the main routes – in the area bordered by Bartók Béla út, Etele út and Szerémi út. Both branches of Sárbogárdi út, Lecke utca between Soproni út and Nándorfejérvári út, and Bukarest utca between Kosztolányi Dezső tér and Kanizsai utca can be opened to bicycle traffic.
With the conversion of the existing junction on Bártfai utca-Tétényi út, the intersection can become safe for everyone. The north-south noise barrier between Szerémi út and Hamzsabégi út is currently being interrupted by the opening of a new, gap-filling cycling connection within the district, the statement said.
According to the company, after the successful public procurement procedure, the work is expected to start later this year and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2023. It was also reported that the investment in Újbuda is part of a larger development program. Within the framework of the Competitive Operational Program (VEKOP) with the European Union, a total of HUF 8.39 billion gross support will be provided to make the capital’s road network cycling-friendly.
