Preuner re-elected as chairman of the Salzburg city ÖVP

Harald Preuner was confirmed in office at the city party conference of the People’s Party on Wednesday evening – he will remain ÖVP boss in the city of Salzburg for the next four years. The decision is also seen as pointing the way for the next municipal council and mayoral elections in 2024.
It is still unclear whether Preuner WILL run in the municipal council and mayoral elections in 2024, but it is considered likely. In the election on Wednesday evening, he was the only candidate for the city ÖVP chief post. Harald Preuner won two mayoral elections for the ÖVP. This also speaks for him as a candidate, as does the lack of alternatives. “It was already clear to us on the last day of the election that the result was almost 37 percent at the top. I’m not kidding myself, it’s unimaginable to achieve that again,” said the mayor.
No successor in sight
At the moment, nobody in the ranks of the People’s Party is in the foreground who is able or willing to inherit from Preuner. That could also be a boomerang for the ÖVP incumbent, because Preuner can currently govern with a narrow majority in the municipal council. However, this majority will almost certainly be gone by the next election in 2024, says Preuner himself:
Preuner at the next election 65 years
In the election in two years, Preuner will be 65 years old – the prospect of having a majority in the municipal council against him speaks against running again. In any case, the delegates on Wednesday in Salzburg’s Pitter Hall confirmed the incumbent mayor in office with 99.1 percent of the votes.
