Formula 1 | Alonso expects Monaco GP ‘even tougher than usual’
Fernando Alonso will take part in his eighteenth Monaco Grand Prix this weekend, after a triumphant rise to ninth place in the Spanish Grand Prix.
Now a Monegasque resident, he will seek to offer a great show again.
You made your comeback in the points in Spain. Tell us about this excellent race that saw you go from twentieth to ninth place?
It was great fun racing in Spain. Last year we had no spectators due to the pandemic, so it was great to have strong fan support. We didn’t have a good day on Saturday, but we found some rhythm on Sunday and managed to finish in the points after starting from the last position on the starting grid. I had fun and we made some good overtaking in progress. It would seem that the DRS had a big impact, that helped, because it’s normally a circuit where it’s very difficult to overtake. I hope this is just the start of a series of points finishes.
How does it feel to run in the famous streets of Monte-Carlo?
I have always liked racing in Monaco. It’s one of the best shows on the Formula 1 calendar. I think with this year’s F1 cars having less downforce at low and medium speeds, it will be even more difficult than usual in view of the number of turns negotiated at slow speed. As we know, one small mistake in the streets of Monaco and you end up on the rails. Qualifying is also very difficult given the traffic. I can’t wait to take up the challenge!
What is your best memory in Monaco?
My victories acquired in 2006 and 2007 were beautiful and assured my best memories of racing there. In those two years, the battle was fierce throughout the season, and winning in Monaco always gives you a little something extra. I enjoyed most of my lessons in Monaco and it’s great to know that’s also where I live today.
