Visit to Sweden / Finland: Full support for NATO membership, says President Michel
On 25 May 2022, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, visited Sweden to meet with Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, before traveling to Finland to meet with Prime Minister Sanna Marin.
During the visits, President Michel and the leaders of the countries discussed security situation in Europetheir applications for NATO membership and that the agenda for next week’s special meeting of the European Council.
Visit to Sweden
During the meeting with Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, President Michel expressed his full support for Sweden’s application for membership in NATO.
The two leaders also discussed the agenda for the forthcoming European Council, including continued EU support for Ukraine.
Visit to Finland
During the meeting with Prime Minister Sanna Marin, President Michel discussed Finland’s application for NATO membership and said:
We fully support your decision, with the support of the people of Finland, to apply for NATO membership. This is a historic moment for Finland and the EU.

President Michel also emphasized the importance of membership for the transatlantic relationship.
The two leaders discussed the agenda for the forthcoming European Council special meeting and reiterated their full support for Ukraine.
