Red Dragons – Belgium win in three sets in opener against Latvia
For the first of the Italian Emanuele Zanini as coach, the Red Dragons won against Latvia at the opening of the European Golden League of volleyball (men) Wednesday evening in Aalst.
Belgium indeed dominated its subject 3 sets to 0 (25-16, 27-25 and 25-16) for the first match of group C of an annual competition which this time brings together eleven continental nations in the absence of Belarus , suspended. Appointed coach of the Red Dragons in January, Emanuele Zanini led his new team to an easy victory against the 49th nation in the world. Belgium (FIVB 26) will still face the Czech Republic (FIVB 30) and Estonia (FIVB 48) in their group. The Belgians will face the Estonians on June 5 and the Czechs on June 8, each time at the Lange Munte in Kortrijk. At the end of the six days, the first of each of the three groups will be qualified for the Final Four in Croatia, automatically qualified. If Croatia win their group, the best second will also be there. This qualification for the Final Four is the first objective of Zanini, who also aims to hoist the Red Dragons to Euro 2023 while advancing them in the world rankings. The Golden League, organized by the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV), was won in 2021 by Turkey during a Final Four organized in Kortrijk, where the Belgians took 4th place. (Belgian)
