Muco patient Kenneth stands in Brussels for a good cause (Nijlen)
On Sunday, 22-year-old Kenneth Verelst will run the 20 kilometers from Brussels. Not that special in itself, but Kenneth is a mucopatient and runs for Run for Air, a sponsorship for the benefit of the Mucovereniging. Kenneth is determined to complete his first game ever.
“I’ve been training a lot in the past few weeks, so it has to be okay,” said Kenneth. “It is the first time that I participate in a race and then in Brussels, where the course is a bit hilly and you have to go through a lot of tunnels. It will not be easy, but I am sporty, I also play football every week with my enthusiasts team.” A muco patient who takes part in the twenty kilometers from Brussels is special in itself. “I don’t have a very severe form of mucosa, but I often have to go to the physiotherapist to loosen the mucus and also have to take medication. But exercise is good for mucolic patients, it loosens the mucus. When I heard about the Run for Air campaign, through which you could sponsor yourself to run, I was immediately interested. Continuing a sporting performance and at the same time supporting the mucosa association, that’s a nice combination.” Kenneth’s action did not go unnoticed. “The editors of the magazine of the muco-association “Asem” also thought this was a topic and they interviewed me and I decorated the cover of their magazine. They also wanted to advertise that it is good for muco patients to exercise. I am also very interested in my own sponsoring project. People can sponsor me and that money will go to Run for Air, the action of the mucosal association to allow patients to exercise. I have already collected a nice amount, but of course you can always I am certainly not lacking in motivation on Sunday.”
