More than 30 citizens of the Republic of Moldova will join the EU. More than a third want the union with Romania
More than a dozen citizens of the Republic of Moldova will join the EU and more than a third of them will want to join Romania.
These are the results of an opinion poll conducted by the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives (IDIS) “The Future”. The survey was conducted in the Republic of Moldova in May 2022.
Some questions referred to what citizens would vote for if there were a referendum next Sunday. 51.8 percent of those surveyed said they would vote for Moldova to join the EU. On the other hand, 33.1 percent of Moldovan citizens would vote against EU membership.
These results can be explained by the fact that the Republic of Moldova still has strong economic relations with Russia and other CIS countries. On the one hand, the Republic of Moldova has almost total energy dependence on Russia, and on the other hand, agricultural products from the Republic of Moldova are mainly exported to CIS member countries.
One of the politicians who insisted on maintaining relations with Russia is Igor Dodon – both during his time as head of state and later. It is interesting that, even these days, Dodon was detained in the Republic of Moldova. One of the accusations brought by the prosecutors from Chisinau is that of treason.
More than 34 percent of Moldovan citizens would vote union with Romania
34.7 percent of citizens surveyed in the Republic of Moldova said they would vote for the reintegration of their countries with Romania. However, 49.7 percent said they would vote against the union.
