Liechtenstein: Blackmail via social networks (sextortion)
On a social network, an unknown perpetrator tried to blackmail a young man.
The woman contacted the man via chat and asked him to send sexual pictures of himself.
He was then blackmailed into publishing the recordings unless he paid a sum of several hundred francs.
The State Police advises:
- Do not accept friend requests and invitations from people on social networks unless they can be positively identified.
- Refrain from indiscreet actions, because every video chat can be filmed.
- If you are being blackmailed and asked to pay money, break off contact with the blackmailers immediately.
- Don’t transfer money. If image or video material has already been published by the perpetrator, the deletion can be requested via the relevant platform. The image or video material as well as all information about the perpetrators (chat history, etc.) should be secured.
