She was born in Iran, says Anna. There is her homeland. Even if she now lives in Germany. For Yusuf, Iraq is his homeland, the culture there, his family who still live there. Ibrahim feels proud when he thinks of his native Pakistan. Leyla is half Polish, half German and Alesandro is German. And the only one in the class of 19 students who calls Germany his home. In class 6bG of the middle school on Toni-Pfülf-Strasse, almost all of the children have a migration background. At the Munich secondary schools, it is an average of three quarters of the students. Only a quarter of the children in grammar schools have a migration background. The school social workers speak of stressed children growing up in a stigmatized neighborhood and of a school system that disadvantages them. They love their job. It’s not all hopeless, they say, even if it sometimes looks that way.
Sassan von Papp, the class teacher of 6bG, also sees it that way. “When I see the kids understanding something they didn’t understand before, that’s it!” That’s what drives Sassan von Papp. The reason he loves being a middle school teacher. And the children feel it too.
Stephanie Heyl from the Bavarian State Association for Home Care explains why home can also be a country that you have perhaps never seen before. For ten years she has been traveling through Bavaria with a school project on the subject of home. And again and again experiences that the home of the parents often has a very special status for children with a migration background.
