Almost half a million Spanish tourists visited Portugal in April
Close to two million Spaniards traveled out of their country in April, more than triple what happened in the same month of 2021, when Europe was still dealing with strong numbers of the pandemic.
Tourism is back, after the worst phase of the pandemic. And that can be seen in Portugal and also in Spain, by the travelers it receives but also by the Spaniards who leave the country. In April 2022, a total of 1.97 million Spaniards went on vacation to other countries. 62% of them go to France, Portugal and Italy, the main preferred destinations (in that order).
The data are from the National Institute of Statistics of Spain and were revealed this week. About one in four people (24%) of Spanish tourists in April traveled to Portugal, totaling close to 474 thousand people, a growth of 24% compared to the same month of 2021. These tourists represent 1.27 million overnight stays in our country (15.8% more than in the same period last year). The average of each visit was 2.7 days in Portugal.
Although Portugal was the second visited by Spaniards in April, country of France, there are residents in certain areas of the neighboring country who have their predilection for our country. Last month Portugal was the leading destination for tourists residing in Madrid, Vigo, Badajoz and Seville.
