World Turtle Day: ten species represent our armored friends at the Debrecen Zoo
Debrecen – The individuals living in the Debrecen zoo moved to the small house next to the Small Predatory House on Monday, where visitors can also admire them.
At the initiative of the United States, we hold World Turtles’ Day on May 23 every year, celebrating the diversity of this special group of animals, and at the same time trying to draw attention to their deprived nature conservation situation, writes the Debrecen Zoo on its community page.
Half of the 360 terrestrial, freshwater and marine turtle species known today are threatened with extinction, and more than a third are listed as endangered or critically endangered by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List. in a post.
As they wrote,
Our armored friends are represented in their collection by 10 species, including the only native turtle species in Hungary, the marsh turtle (Emys orbicularis),
its natural population is declining dangerously across Europe due to the deterioration and disappearance of wetlands, car traffic around egg-laying sites and the rise of invasive jewelers who are bored and released as hobbies.
