Sweden beats Norway 7-1 for the 5th victory in the ice hockey World Cup
TAMPERE, Finland – Sweden took their fifth victory in six matches in the hockey World Cup on Sunday by beating Norway 7-1 in group games when Switzerland remained undefeated and Germany extended their victory race.
Dallas Stars forward Jacob Peterson led the way for Sweden with two goals and an assist, while Rasmus Asplund in the Buffalo Sabers also scored two goals. Detroit Red Wings goalkeeper Magnus Hellberg stopped 19 of 20 shots when Sweden returned to victory one day after a 3-2 loss in overtime against the United States.
Germany has a five-match winning streak after defeating Kazakhstan 5-4, but it was the fourth match with a goal in that run. Yasin Ehliz scored in the third period to restore Germany’s lead after Kazakhstan had recovered from a 4-2 defeat.
Germany are without Tim Stutzle after the Ottawa Senators’ forward was scratched during the rest of the tournament on Sunday with what the team called a minor knee injury that he suffered against France on Monday.
Switzerland lost 2-0 to France in the first period but recovered to win 5-2 when Nico Hischier of the New Jersey Devils scored two goals and one assist. Switzerland has won all six of its matches, the only undefeated team remaining, and avoiding defeat in the rules on Tuesday against Germany will ensure that the Swiss qualify as top seed in Group A.
Latvia kept alive weak chances to reach the quarterfinals with a 4-3 win over Great Britain but must beat Sweden in their last group game on Tuesday to have a chance to advance.
