Spectacular accident on E19 in Wilrijk: car ends up on the roof and burns out, processing injured to hospital (Wilrijk)
On Sunday morning a spectacular accident on the E19 towards Antwerp was hit. After a collision, the victim’s car slammed into the guardrail, started spinning and ended up on its roof. The vehicle burned out completely. The highway was completely closed for a while.
The accident on the E19 in the direction of Antwerp happened at 6 a.m. Just after the Wilrijk exit and before the Craeybeckxtunnel, the driver collided with a van for a reason that is still unclear. The impact threw the vehicle away, slammed into the guardrail and started spinning. The car eventually came to rest on its roof and caught fire.
“The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital with injuries. He is not seriously injured,” said Sandra Eyschen of the federal police. The driver of the van produced minor injuries.
Fire Brigade Zone Antwerp came to the scene to extinguish the burning vehicle and to clear the roadway. During the entire towing and clearing of the roadway, the E19 was completely blocked in the direction of Antwerp. Traffic had to leave the highway via the Wilrijk exit and take a detour. The road was reopened around 8:30 am. Traffic disruption on Sunday morning was limited.
