In addition to the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia, Hungary is also competing for the facility, which is scheduled to open in 2027.
Only Michael Oeljeklaus, Škoda’s head of production and logistics, said they could only hope that the parent company Volkswagen would make the decision by 2023 at the latest.
In parallel, the Czech brand’s Mlada Boleslav plant was expanded with a battery pack production line to produce batteries for Audis, Cupras and Volkswagen in addition to Škodas. The annual production of the system will initially be set at 250,000 units, but from 2023 the capacity will be expanded to 380,000 units.
Currently, four car manufacturers in Hungary have more serious interests: Audi’s plant is located in Győr, Mercedes’s in Kecskemét, Suzuki’s in Esztergom, while Stellantis’ engine plant operates in Szentgotthárd – the line will continue to develop in the near future, as the BMW plant is already under construction in Debrecen.
