Minister defense of relations with allies to “elevate” Portugal’s role at sea | navy
The Minister of Defense defended this Sunday the Reinforcement and Construction of New Bridges Between International Analysts and the Portuguese Navy, in order to “elevate even more” the role of Portugal as a producer of maritime security.
“No one in the world is as globalized and has as much weight in the global economy as trade has, it is essential to guarantee the safe free use of the sea”, said Helenareiras, in the city of Faro.
Speaking at the official ceremony of the Navy Day celebrations, the Minister of Defence, defended the need for Portugal to “continue to build new bridges between partners and allies, promoting initiatives such as maritime presences for the integration of the European Union or innovative formats such as the Atlantic Center”.
According to the official, the further strengthening of these relations allows “to elevate Portugal’s international role as a producer of maritime security”.
“We are considering its own international context of jobs and workforces, with a reflection on new and different capabilities, flexibility, interoperability and operational readiness, with a reflection on operational capabilities and operational readiness”. .
Helena Carreirasdian said that the project of a Multifunctional Naval Platform, whose funding was approved by the Council of Ministers on 12th of May, of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), “is fundamental, for each side, for the Navy to reinforce its operational capacity” .
Helena Carreiras also defended the need to “continue to assess the military condition and dignify the Armed Forces”, with the possibility of career progression and dignification.
“We will also have to take action, together, in all the exercises to be able to advance in the implementation of the Action plans for the Professionalization of the Military and Sectoral Service of National Defense for Equality and so we can recruit the best, retain them with dignity and ensure that the instruments for a successful transition later have for civilian life”, he concluded.
In his speech, the Chief of Staff of the Armada, Admiral Gouveia e Melo, said he was convinced that Portugal “will increasingly focus on the sea, the frontier of opportunity that opens up to the future”.
“Our geography demands it and history reminds us of it”, noted Gouveia e Melo.
The admiral said that the enhancement of human resources, in their technical, technologically advanced training, along with remuneration and transformation “are essential for the motivation, recruitment and guidance of personnel” in the Portuguese Navy.
The city of Faro was chosen this year for the celebrations of the Navy Day, after two years in which the date was celebrated with programs connected due to the covid-19 pandemic.
Navy Day is celebrated on May 20 in honor of the feat of the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama who, in 1498, called Europe to the East for the first time by sea, with his arrival in Calicut, India.
To mark the date, the Navy deployed a total of 1,200 soldiers to the Algarve.
