An original work. From Tuesday May 24 to Saturday May 28, 2022, the Théâtre du Pavé in Toulouse is hosting the play “Jean Jaurès’ trip to Latin America”. This original work was written by the film director, Francis Fourcou. She met on stage the actor Francis Azéma in the role of Jean Jaurès.

The letters of Jean Jaurès in the form of “cine-théâtrale”

Through speeches and letters, the play recounts his adventures in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina from July to October 1911. And to bring to life the greatest journey of his life to the theatre, the director, Francis Fourcou, mixes cinema and theatre. This “cine-theatre” is an alliance between audiovisual technologies and digital effects with the traditional staging of a play.

The images and texts are then projected onto a screen in the background. On the front of the stage, Francis Azéma will play a Jean Jaurès “orator but also intimate” as explained in the press release of the Théâtre du Pavé. The public will then attend the alternation between the letters of Jean Jaurès to his wife, Louise. Then his American speeches. “It is this avant-garde word of the great tribune, humanist philosopher, pacifist, anti-colonialist, eminent actor of the laws of secular tolerance, that tells Jean Jaurès’ trip to Latin America”, explains the press release.

Subjects still relevant more than a hundred years later

What can fascinate the public is the relevance of the words of Jean Jaurès written in 1911. This humanist, pacifist or even anti-colonialist vision is sometimes still relevant, more than a hundred later. During his trip, Jean Jaurès will give many conferences during which he will deliver his thoughts to his audience. These conferences put forward his ideas on intercultural exchanges, international relations, the conditions of social progress with regard to economic changes, migrations…

“The letters written to his wife during the trip, restored to the screen in the landscapes of Tarn childhood, plunge us into the limpid thought of the philosopher, at the heart of an ever-renewed humanism”, says the press release.

Prices vary from 9 euros to 18 euros. Reservations are possible on the website of the Pavé Theater or at 05 62 26 43 66.
