Portuguese teachers proposed Portugal “despoeirado” in Paris
“ONE The idea is to leave the common places, but not forgetting them too, and present another canon, another selection according to our taste and that comes out of what always appears. We had many examples of female artists here and we wanted to give a dust-free view. Enough of nostalgia, of a vision that is no longer current”, explained Ana Bela, professor of Portuguese and Almeida culture at the University of Liverpool, in Portuguese statements to the Lusa agency.
It was a relaxed conversation that Ana Bela Almeida and Gonçalo Duarte, librarian at the Libraries of Paris and former professor of Portuguese in countries such as Belgium, Italy and France, presented a Portugal far from easy ideas, decoding the word saudade through Eduardo Lourenço, speaking of the 25th de Abril with the help of “Tanto Mar” by Chico Buarque or the problem of gentrification in Lisbon with “Gentrificasamba”, by Samba Sem Fronteiras.
In 2021, Ana Bela Almeida, Gonçalo Duarte and Joana Meirim published the book “Literary Quiosque – Learning Portuguese with Literature” (LIDEL) which was presented to students of Portuguese as a foreign language to deepen their knowledge of the language and culture of literature.
A different way of showing Portugal, which served as the basis for the event “Chega de Saudade” that integrates the program of the Cruzada Season between France and Portugal that extends to the libraries of the French capital, and that in the 19th district of Paris wanted to end ideas about the country.
“I was, in fact, during the years, I met with a teacher nor I met him. A boy who developed in Portugal, were associated with common places throughout a world that I discovered and that went to the city and for me it was great in a whole world that met and went to the city and for myself it was the reality. They had differences when they taught in Italy or experiences. Belgium In Italy presented a country that was not known, had done, what ideas is the case in France”, did not explain Gonçalo Duarte.
In the audience, also linked to the Portuguese language and to issues related to colonization, French and the connection to French colonization. One of the ways to end these achievements, according to Gonçalo Duarte, is to continue to invest in teaching Portuguese in France with teachers from Portugal.
“We must continue to invest in education in France that is not envied. And, therefore, the entry of readers who come from Portugal, who know contemporary Portugal and know what goes on there”,
For Ana Bela Almeida, Portuguese manuals need to be quick in the “very positive” view of Portugal and that it be more like the country it is today, especially through its artists such as the painter Paula Rego or the poet Adília Lopes.
“Even these more subversive works arouse more interest, even now I saw people’s faces when Paula Rego’s paintings appear, that actually generates curiosity. that produces extraordinary works of art”, he concluded.
