“Only yes means yes”: women demonstrate in Zurich
Numerous women met for a rally in Zurich on Saturday afternoon. They demand that “Only yes means yes” be laid down in sexual criminal law.
In addition to various organizations such as Brava, Campax or the feminist peace organization, the SP Frauen Schweiz also called for the demonstration in Zurich. With the rally, they carried “the fight for our sexual self-determination” onto the street, as stated in a statement. The organizers speak of around a thousand people who are calling their call.
Together they demonstrated for the legal anchoring of “Only yes means yes” and for comprehensive measures against sexualised, domestic and gender-specific violence. For the demonstrators, one thing is clear: Only the “Only yes means yes” solution effectively protects sexual self-determination.
Council of States Commission and Federal Council want “No means No”
For them, the demonstration was “a combative signal” in the direction of the Council of States: They fear that the Council of States will follow its legal commission in the summer session in June. Because, like the Federal Council, the commission advocates the “no means no” solution when it comes to revising sexual criminal law. That is, the victim must communicate verbally or non-verbally that they do not want the sexual act. There is no need for violence, threats or psychological pressure to make rape a criminal offence.
With the “Only yes means yes” solution, on the other hand, a person must explicitly agree to the sex. In parliament, politicians from the SP and the Greens are campaigning for this solution. (abi)
