Formula 1 | Sainz wonders why Leclerc took such a risk with historic Monaco GP
After Charles Leclerc had an accident at the recent historic Monaco Grand Prix, his Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz wondered if it was a good idea for the championship leader to take such a risk.
Leclerc was driving Niki Lauda’s 1974 Ferrari 312B3 when he lost control of the car at La Rascasse and slid into the barriers causing extensive rear damage. Ferrari later confirmed that Leclerc was uninjured in the incident but had experienced a problem with the brakes.
“I had the opportunity to drive historic cars in the past,” Sainz told Barcelona.
“It always gives you a vision of what the sport was like a few years ago, a long time ago. It’s very good!”
“But I’m divided on this, why take this risk? This brake disc could have broken in a much more dangerous place for Charles. In Sainte-Dévote or at the port chicane.”
“Why this risk when there is a chance of winning the championship with Ferrari? Why risk being in a situation like the one that happened to him?”
“Every time I jump into a classic F1, I have these things in my head. And if I jump into an F1, I know I’m going to push it… But an accident can always happen and then leave you with other questions…”
