The program includes the first comic opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart or the “The simple pretense”on booklet by Marco Coltellini, taken from a work by Carlo Goldoni. The year of composition is 1769. Mozart was only twelve years old and the first was performed in the bishop’s palace of Colloredo in Salzburg, on May 1, 1769. The father “manager” knew well that his wolfgang would not be a child prodigy for still a long time and he intended to show just how competent a composer of theatrical works can be. Although not yet studying in Italy, Mozart had listened to numerous Italian operas on trips to Bavaria, Belgium and London. He had taken singing lessons and, thanks to his extraordinary talents, he had no difficulty in making a ‘comic opera of a good standard. The overture K. 51 is a small symphony in three movements, according to the scheme ofItalian overturecheerful-andante-allegro.
To follow the “Concerto in C major K. 467 for piano and orchestra” work of 1785 linked to the years in which Mozart he lived in Vienna managing to support himself above all by performing his own compositions. He himself played the piano concerts, numerous at that time: fourteen in about five years. In a famous letter to his father, he explains that he has achieved a happy one balance between easy and difficult, or rather to have written in such a way as to satisfy the most educated and prepared listeners, the connoisseurs, without displeasing those who are less musically educated. What distinguishes this and other piano concertos by Mozart from the contemporary ones is the conception of the relationship between soloist and orchestra: Mozart highlights not only the virtuosic possibilities of the piano, the cantability, but also theexpressiveness of the orchestra in all its sections.
At the end of the evening there “Symphony n. 99 in E flat major “written by Francesco Giuseppe Haydn in the Viennese suburb of Gumpendorf in 1793 and executed al King’s Theater in London the following year. For the first time the composer used clarinets, just like Mozart in the last symphonies, fascinated by the soft timbre of this instrument which at the time is still considered a novelty for the orchestra. The Symphony in E flat major is Haydn’s first symphony of the second London period, which is well suited to the refined, musically cultured and demanding English audience.
