Mario Draghi: We are ready to strengthen the NATO contingent in Bulgaria with 750 troops
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced in parliament that Rome is ready to strengthen the contingent of NATO allied forces in Bulgaria and Hungary, suitable with 750 and 250 troops. Strength in a NATO country, as well as among the leading EU countries, is also measured by military commitment. Therefore, the transformation of Italy into its Framework Nation in Bulgaria means that the waters of NATO countries present in this region. It is responsible for command, control, logistics, or in other words, for anything necessary for the leadership position. In this way, the political weight of Italy will increase, experts say.
The Italian tricolor will be flown within the command of the operations on Bulgarian territory. Therefore, the contingent was inevitably growing from 350 to 750 troops, with the frequency coming from the military.
Following the publication of the third decree on the sending of weapons to Ukraine, Italy is now preparing the procedure for sending troops to Bulgaria and Romania. According to the Sole 24 Ore newspaper of the Low Foreign Affairs Council in the Defense format in Brussels, on May 17, Minister of War Guerini met with his Bulgarian counterpart, Dragomir Zakov.
Guerini thanked Bulgaria for Italy’s proposal to be a Framework Nation, after Sofia responded in the affirmative. The Guerini Council reaffirmed the need to use the “strategic compass” and the “EU-level strategy for maritime, air, cyber and space security, as well as the strengthening of industrial cooperation”.
According to the newspaper, the bet with Bulgaria is not only strategic in military terms. There is also an industrial profile, and it, according to Guerini, is the main and decisive one.
