FDP and SVP see public transport in Zurich in danger
Tempo 30 should not slow down buses and trams, demand the FDP and SVP in a cantonal initiative.
The launch of the legislative initiative on Friday, May 20, 2022 is particularly related to efforts by the cities of Zurich and Winterthur to introduce a 30 km/h speed limit on a large scale.
Due to speed reductions on main traffic routes, public transport (ÖV) is slowing down, the quality of the service is falling and connections can no longer be guaranteed, the FDP and SVP state in a statement. “In order to keep to the timetable, whenever several vehicles are used on courses, this makes public transport massively more expensive.”
According to the public transport initiative “So that nobody stands still in Zurich”, the Zurich municipalities should ensure that public transport is not obstructed or slowed down by structural measures or traffic regulations. If she dies anyway, she would have to bear “the resulting additional costs for maintaining the attractiveness of public transport” herself.
The initiators write that mobility should be kept attractive throughout the canton of Zurich. Mobility is central to “our high quality of life and our prosperity”.
In addition to costs and damage, mobility also creates added value
Among other things, going to the office, buying a mobile phone and having a washing machine delivered are not possible without an efficient transport infrastructure. “Even the organic carrots are not delivered to the city by cargo bike,” SVP cantonal councilor Christian Lucek is quoted as saying in the message.
According to Hans-Jakob Boesch, President of the FDP Canton Zurich, mobility is often only associated with costs and damage. However, the fact that mobility creates added value was often ignored. The aim of the public transport initiative is “future-oriented mobility, with reliable and affordable public transport as a central carrier”.
In order for the initiative to be submitted, the initiators must collect 6,000 signatures within six months.
