Streets blind door flooding, roof blown away in Limburg
The severity of the storm appears to be less than predicted, although there is damage. The fire brigade zone of East Limburg had to pull out a hundred times on Friday afternoon for flooding in Maasmechelen and Zutendaal, among others. A heavy rain shower flooded many streets in Maasmechelen because the sewers could not process the rainwater. In Bilzen, a sewer cover in the Brugstraat rose again, causing mutually driving cars to rise. The Industrielaan in Hoeselt was also flooded.
Several roofs of an asparagus nursery in Gingelom were damaged during the daytime thunderstorm on Friday afternoon. The damage was possibly caused by a downwind from a small tornado.
The Brussels fire brigade received 72 on Thursday for the thunderstorm that moved over the country. Fifty of these have already been completed, with the other 22 firefighters still have their hands full.
Delays of up to one hour at Brussels Airport
Arrivals and departures at Brussels Airport have been delayed due to the rainfall. “Around 1.30 pm we had to stop ground operations on the asphalt for about twenty minutes and that had consequences,” said spokeswoman Nathalie Pierard.
During those twenty minutes of ‘work stoppage’, for example, no luggage could be loaded or the aircraft could not be refueled. Delays of twenty minutes to more than one hour must currently be taken into account. Flights to flights are also experiencing delays, because bad weather was also forecast in other countries.
Brussels Airport destinations that passengers can continue the nuisance for a number of hours, but makes sure that everything will go back to normal by the evening. “The center of gravity of the thunderstorm seems to have passed, so we hope that all passengers reach their destination,” according to Pierard, which will be a busy day at the airport on Friday with 480 flights and 60,000 passengers in total.
Brussels Airlines airline canceled five flights on Friday afternoon in consultation with foreign airlines, in order to ensure a better spread of ground operations on the tarmac. These are flights to Vienna, Geneva, Oslo, Rome and Copenhagen. An alternative flight will be provided for affected travelers.
