The Zurich City Hospital has relied on quality measurements for many years. The aim is to optimize the quality of treatment for patients. In addition, since 2018 the Zurich City Hospital has been actively committed to the goals of “Smarter Medicine – choose wisely Switzerland”. In doing so, the probability of the topic of medical over- and incorrect care is sensitized and that patients should be given an even greater say in certain treatment issues.

The Cardiac Surgery Clinic at the Zurich Triemli City Hospital is one of the leading clinics for minimally invasive cardiac surgery. In addition to a better cosmetic result, minimally invasive procedures lead to fewer infections and faster recovery. The infection rates are significantly lower than expected. The clinic also shows excellent results in operations: in 2021, 233 patients underwent coronary artery surgery.

A quarter of the cases had been preceded by a heart attack. 99.6 percent of these patients were successfully treated. In the Neurology and Stroke Unit, the rapid intervention of specialists in the event of a stroke saved an above-average number of lives and prevented permanent damage. A very good quality of treatment is also evident in visceral surgery, vascular surgery and urology.

Despite the management of the corona pandemic, high medical quality and optimal care for Covid patients and patients was guaranteed at the Zurich City Hospital. In addition, the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMS) has recognized the long-Covid consultation hours in Waid as a prime example of contemporary, interprofessional work.

The qualitative requirements of norms, standards and guidelines for the respective areas were checked in various audits and inspections. All accreditations and certifications of the Zurich City Hospital remain in place or are renewed.

As a member of the Quality Medicine Initiative, the Zurich City Hospital exceeds the existing legal requirements for quality assurance and sets high standards in the interest of the best medicine and the greatest possible patient safety.

This is also shown by the feedback: 83.1 percent of the patients were satisfied with the quality of the treatment, 90.4 percent had the feeling that they had received understandable answers to their questions.
