10 years after the earthquake in Emilia. Mattarella in the Modena area for the commemoration
At 4.03 am on May 20, 2012 the earth tremblesa shock of magnitude 5.9 with its epicenter in Finale Emilia, devastating the territory and at the same time the daily life of a Region. Nine days later the nightmare returns: the earthquake hits Medolla, Mirandola and San Felice sul Panaro causing the greatest number of victims; many of which in the warehouses where work was being carried out to repair the structures already damaged by the first shock. Ten years later, Emilia-Romagna remembers that tragedy: the 28 dead, 300 injured, 45,000 displaced persons, the very serious damage to the artistic heritage, to rural, industrial and civil buildings estimated at 13 billion euros. But also “an exemplary reconstruction”, “an extraordinary capacity for reaction”, “a great unanimous response”: in the words of the President of the Region Stefano Bonaccini, the applause for how Vasco Errani, his predecessor, and the mayors of 2012 were able to manage the emergency by taking the communities by the hand, then able to industriously adopt the rebirth. “A common heritage that must remain”. Hence the present. “If today we have to face an emergency it is energy, supplies of raw materials, construction sites that risk blocking, slowing down the reconstruction here”.
History of a community symbol of resilience, also celebrated by the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella in the Modena area, first in Medolla for the deposition of a wreath on the monument dedicated to the victims of the earthquake; then in Finale Emilia for the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Rulli Frulli musical band. “From the earthquake and the pandemic, lessons and experiences have come. The strength of a community resides in participation, in being aware that each of us – no one excluded – needs the others. In the awareness that institutions are strong if citizens recognize themselves in them and find a secure anchorage there, especially in moments of greatest difficulty. It is together that we can build the future. To build a better, more functional, more just reality, not simply to go back to the old times ”, so President Mattarella speaking to Medolla.
