The winner of the Probstei architecture competition has been announced
The team from mmmr Architekten from Zurich won the competition for the construction of apartments, studios and the Probstei kindergarten in May 2022.
With the moderate and socially acceptable densification, the Sunniger Hof settlement cooperative is making a contribution to the creation of urgently needed, affordable living space in the city of Zurich.
The Sunnige Hof settlement cooperative will renew and expand its housing stock under the motto “Inexpensive: economical, ecological and social”. The 36 terraced houses on Dübendorfstraße from 1945 are to be replaced by new buildings with around 135 apartments.
Contemporary switching and guest rooms, a common room, studios and a double kindergarten should contribute to a lively, flexible and family-friendly settlement.
As part of a participatory process organized by the settlement cooperative, the internal “Probstei project group” was involved in developing the general conditions and in the competition program for the architectural competition.
Architectural competition in open procedure
On behalf of the Sunniger Hof settlement cooperative, the office for structural engineering carried out an open-ended architectural competition. The team from mmmr architects from Zurich won the process.
In addition to the aspect of social sustainability, the replacement new buildings focus on lower CO2 consumption in construction and operation, good floor plan solutions in relation to the traffic-intensive Dübendorfstraße and a natural outdoor space design.
Modernization of the garden city
The winning project “the three magnets” makes a contribution to the modernization of the garden city of Schwamendingen. Three compact, seven-story rows of buildings are located near Dübendorfstraße and thus at the greatest possible distance from the sheltered buildings of the start-up stage.
Thanks to the reference to the existing housing estate architecture with the features pitched roof, dormer, roof incision, bay window and canopy, a good integration into the quarter succeeds. In consideration of the proximity of the neighboring buildings, both volumes in the eastern section are one floor lower.
In the lower part of the plot in the west, a front building closes off the ensemble from the neighboring plot. Since the underground car park is completely under the buildings, a spacious, diverse garden area that can also be planted with large trees can be created within the settlement, which offers the residents a meeting place in the sense of the cooperative character.
Project contributes to reducing greenhouse gases
The project also contributes to biodiversity and local heat reduction. The apartments are well organized, all oriented on two sides and bright. The studios are located on the ground floor and can be accessed directly from the sidewalk via small niche-like front areas.
The common room is arranged on the ground floor at the end of the garden to the west. The double kindergarten is located in a small house, surrounded by playgrounds and green areas for the children of the settlement and the kindergarten children.
Thanks to the sustainable concrete-wood hybrid construction and the south-facing photovoltaic elements on the roof and on the facade parapets, the project also makes a substantial structural contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Settlement cooperative Sunniger Hof
The Sunnige Hof settlement cooperative was founded in Zurich in 1942 and is now one of the larger housing cooperatives in the canton of Zurich. With additional offers in their settlements, the settlement cooperative makes a contribution to actual neighborhood life. Separate settlement commissions are responsible for events to promote coexistence in the cooperative. In living together, the Sunnige Hof settlement cooperative maintains a culture of mutual consideration and good neighborliness.
