Szijjártó: Hungary is participating in measures aimed at preventing the food crisis
Hungary will continue to participate in international efforts to prevent the global food crisis following the war in Ukraine, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in New York on Thursday.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the head of the ministry in the open discussion of the UN Security Council (UN Security Council) on conflicts and food security . due to possible new influx of immigrants.
In his speech, he called the armed conflict a serious risk to the global food supply, as Russia and Ukraine are also among the world’s largest grain exporters.
I note that the war has caused a particularly serious situation in other regions facing difficulties,
economic challenges may even lead to a terrorist threat, which could lead to further waves of migration. Péter Szijjártó stressed that the international community must do everything possible to prevent such a crisis.
In his words, there are two possible directions for this: either we need to make up for the lost amount from alternative sources, or it is not possible, we need to help Ukraine maintain its exports.
In view of this, Hungary is helping farmers in Transcarpathia with seeds, ten tons of corn, five tons of potatoes and half a ton of sunflower, thus supporting local supply and export capacities, he said.
The Minister also pointed out that food shortages are causing a significant rise in prices,
which is also well illustrated by the fact that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) price index rose to a record high of 21 in one year.
He stated that it is the responsibility of governments not to have to pay the price of war for those who cannot be blamed for its outbreak, which is why, for example, Hungary introduced an official price for several basic foods.
Finally, he emphasized the importance of promoting capacity building in countries in need, so it is a serious achievement that several hundred and three foreign food industry experts have already graduated from Hungary’s higher education institutions. “We are ready to continue our involvement in international efforts to prevent the food crisis”- summed up.
