Parking with maximum duration abolished
In certain places in the city you can park for a limited time, in some cases also at a low rate. For example, in the parking lots at sports fields of shopping streets. If you stay there longer, you will receive a parking ticket. The Supreme Court has ruled that this is not allowed. That is why, from June 5, the normal parking times and rates will also apply in these places. We explain why here.
In many parts of the city where payment applies, there are also areas where a maximum parking duration applies. For example, you can stay there for a maximum of one hour, sometimes at a separate rate. If that parking time is 2 hours, you may not stand 1 or more in that same area. We call this parking duration restriction. we ensure that there is sufficient space to park, for example near shopping streets and sports fields, and we prevent parking nuisance.
Supreme Court: no parking ticket after full parking time
In Amsterdam via the parking meter or parking meter for parking. Parking fee is a form of tax. Scan cars check whether parking fees are paid for license plates. If this is not the case, you will receive a parking ticket (additional tax assessment). In places where a maximum term may apply. If you are still parked after that, you will receive a parking ticket. According to the statement of the Supreme Court, this is not allowed. After the maximum parking time, it is not permitted to levy a parking tax. The municipality is therefore not allowed to issue a parking ticket.
Exceptions
In Weesp, the parking duration limitation is included in the parking regulations, and not in council decisions as in the city of Amsterdam. The parking rules are described in a parking ordinance. The parking duration restriction will remain in effect there for the time being. Boas can control. At the sports parks with a maximum duration and the Sint Barbara (West) cemetery, the hourly rate remains at 10 cents per hour. At Sportpark Olympiaplein, the 10 cent rate will be canceled on Saturdays.
on this map you will find an overview of the areas with parking restrictions and the times and rates from 5 June 2022.
Your parking ticket
Did you receive a parking ticket after 27 January 2022 because you have been parked in a paid parking space for longer than the maximum parking time? In that case, you can lodge an objection via amsterdam.nl/frequently asked. The parking ticket will then be waived, even if you have already paid. Please note: this only concerns the parking ticket. You simply have to pay a parking fee for parking up to the maximum parking duration. You cannot object to this.
Follow-up
We are taking these measures to comply with the notification of the Supreme Court in the short term. We are currently investigating a way to design in other places where a limited parking time is possible. If so, parking time restriction will come back. If this is possible, we will see if there are other options to choose to ensure sufficient parking without parking nuisance of course.
