Architect angry at ‘mutilating’ school in Amsterdam: ‘Who really thinks up?’ † Inland
Eye-catching gray ventilators have been installed in the school building of the Bredero Vocational College in Amsterdam to ensure that graduates do not take an exam. Architect Bjarne Mastenbroek (58) considers it a ‘mutilation’ of his work. “I’ve never seen it so bright.”
Anyone passing the Meeuwenlaan in Amsterdam-Noord can hardly miss: the large gray pipes that emerge from the wall of the Bredero Professional College. Mastenbroek, the building’s architect, posted a photo of it on his Instagram page.
Multiple people recording on the of the school building. “Is this a joke?” someone responds.
And the architect himself is not pleased with the expansion either. “It is definitely a mutilation of the building. Who thinks a little? I’ve never seen it so furry. Mastenbroek extends the adaptation of the building ‘as if you were a drunken Center Pompidou on an existing building’.
No beauty prize
Mathilde Wolffenbuttel, spokesperson for the public schools group Secondary Education of Amsterdam (VOvA) recognizes that the tubes are ‘not a beauty prize’, but that is not what they are intended for. The ventilation pipes have been temporarily suspended to cool the gymnasiums, where the final exam candidates are in May.
“We are in the middle of the exam period. To create a good climate for our exam students, we have temporarily installed air conditioning in the gyms. Education even takes precedence over the appearance of the building.”
The architect fears that the adjustment will affect his work. ,,When I receive a new order, customers sometimes visit my previous works. And then they come across this. Very sad.”
Fortunately for Mastenbroek, the solution is forthcoming: next Wednesday the exams will be over and then the ventilation pipes will be removed again.
