The City Hall of Prague 3 will have the vote renamed Koněvova Street
The Prague 3 Council approved the intention to rename Koněvova Street to Hartigova in April, and the city council will discuss the proposal in June. However, the renaming of the street would ultimately be decided by the municipality’s management.
According to a town hall spokesman, the survey is possible about 5,000 people who have a permanent residence in Koněvova Street, about 500 companies, which have an establishment there. Each participant will be able to vote only once.
Online voting
“Each respondent entitled to vote will receive a unique code to log in to the online questionnaire where he or she can select your preferred street name and may also specify a reason in case of disagreement with the change“Trojan described. Citizens who do not have access to the Internet can vote under selected unique codes at selected stone sites in Prague 3. Voting will be anonymous, the spokesman added.
The results of the survey will be used to decide on the intention to rename the street of Žižkov representatives. They should discuss the matter at their meeting on 21 June. If the city council approves, the renaming of the street will be discussed by the municipal topographical commission and subsequently by the councilor of the capital. According to the Prague 3 councilor for strategic planning and participation, Pavel Křeček (STAN), it is impossible to predict when the street could possibly bear a new name.
In the event that the street is renamed, City Hall counts setting up an infoline and information website and extending office hours, so that the inhabitants of the street can exchange their ID card for the office and, in the case of owning a car or motorcycle, also a technical card.
Not Konev’s
Calls for renaming the street in Žižkov, named after Koněv, have appeared repeatedly in the past. This time the councilors of Prague 3 dealt with the renaming at the proposal of the Club of Friends of Žižkov. Earlier, the town hall had a sign placed in the street explaining the context of the life of the controversial marshal.
Marshal Ivan Stepanovich Konev (1897 to 1973) was a Russian military leader and Soviet marshal. At the end of the Second World War, Prague, parts of Poland, Silesia and Saxony were threatened with liberation. He also led the bloody suppression of the uprising in Hungary and worked in Berlin during the construction of the Berlin Wall.
The management of Prague 6 had the marshal’s statue removed from the Interbrigade Square in Bubeneč last April. Against were the Russian embassy, communists or various pro-Russian associations and activists. Prague has also recently renamed part of Korunovační Street near the Russian Embassy in Prague 6 to Ukrainian Heroes in connection with the current war in Ukraine. Now it is decided that Koněv will not be an honorary citizen of Prague. The revocation of citizenship was approved by the city council on May 9, it has yet to be discussed by city councilors.
