Professor Luisa Torsi awarded in Vienna: the ceremony with the Minister of the Environment of Austria, the President of the Puglia Region and the Italian Ambassador – PRESS REGIONE
A bioelectronic system that in a very short time is able to detect a single protein marker or virus in a blood or saliva sample. It is called “Single Molecule digital assay” and is the revolutionary scientific discovery thanks to which the professor Luisa Torsi, professor of Chemistry at the University of Bari and vice president of the Scientific Council of the CNR, received the Wilhelm Exner medal this evening in Vienna. This is the recognition conferred by the Austrian Trade Association a. The medal has also been awarded to 23 Nobel laureates over the years.
Professor Luisa Torsi was awarded this evening, at the Palais Eschenbach in Vienna, by Leonore Gewessler, Federal Minister for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology of the Republic of ‘Austria.
To accompany her on president of the Puglia Regiontogether with the direction of the Regional Economic Development Department, Gianna Elisa Berlingerio, the director of the Research and International Relations Section and the Digital Transformation Section, Vito Bavaro and the researchers of the University of Bari and Brescia.
“The Wilhelm Exner award for Luisa Torsi is a great pride for Puglia – the president of the Region – Imagine that this award in the past was awarded to another Italian, to Guglielmo Marconi, it is therefore one of those awards that could also bring another wonderful surprise for Italian research. I wanted to accompany Luisa here in Vienna to encourage her, to ensure that this news does not go unnoticed and above all because this discovery has potential repercussions on people’s health of great importance. Because we may simply be able to predict from a salivary test not only if there are diseases, or viral loads, but even negative evolutions in people’s health can be possible, therefore, acting before the symptoms even appear. You will understand that this is a real revolution. It is about predictive medicine, about personalized medicine: the Puglia Region was already investing in the Lecce biopole; these further steps prompted us to invest further in research and to support Luisa Torsi’s project. And so tonight I can only say long live Puglia, long live Italy, long live Luisa Torsi and her great work for the good of humanity.
“I am deeply honored – said Professor Luisa Torsi – it is truly a moment that moves me and deeply moved me. This is an important prize, Guglielmo Marconi has received it, the Nobel Prizes have received it and I never thought I would be able to get this far. I am also truly honored and delighted that the delegation of the Puglia Region and the President Emilia in the first place are here to attend this event. Super happy, thank you “.
“It is a real pride to be here in Vienna – said the Italian Ambassador to Vienna Stefano Beltrame -. Italy is a country that is very often critical of itself but in reality has sensational excellences that stand out on very competitive markets. I would therefore like to thank Professor Torsi for the help she offers to our self-esteem. It is also very pleased to observe that these are the Italian researchers who stand out in the world are not alone, but are accompanied by their local authorities and by the president of the Puglia Region. Puglia is a region that has had an amazing national narrative improvement in the last ten years and is now one of the Italian proud “.
For the director of the Regional Economic Development Department, Gianna Elisa Berlingerio “Puglia is further widening the spectrum of international relations. Today we visited the Austrian institute of technology and there are excellent conditions for starting collaborative relationships with our universities, with our research centers, with the aim of finding an efficient system to pass from patenting, then from the results of the research of base, to the market. We also visited – added Berlingerio – an energy production plant, another issue on which the Region is currently engaged in a creative effort that must lead us to decarbonization in a rapid but effective way, reconciling it with the protection of the territory “.
The Wilhelm Exner Medal is another important recognition conferred to Luisa Tosi who has also recently been the recipient of top-level appointments: as a member of the Scientific Council of the National Research Council, directly appointed by the President of the CNR, Maria Chiara Carrozza elected by the Scientific Council also as vice president. The second appointment concerns her participation in the technical table for the elaboration of the Italian strategy in the field of fundamental research, directly nominated by the Minister of University and Research, Maria Cristina Messa, with the strategic aim of ensuring a profitable contribution to the innovation and development process as defined in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, with specific reference to the physiognomic and defining features of fundamental research, also in comparison with the European and international context.
