ICOM-Portugal warns of lack of conditions in “reference” museums

The president of ICOM also describes “the second chronicle to which museums have been – overwhelmed by the scarcity of resources, concerned with the conservation conditions and the need to investigate their collections, whether with the way of communication with human communities “.

In the document, Maria de Jesus Monge maintains that “museums are an asset and are allies in the dialogue with communities in the preservation of their memories, in the transformation of mentalities and societies, in the promotion of democracy and citizenship and in defense” of fundamental values ​​such as liberty, equality and fraternity”.

However, in the face of “times of uncertainty and perplexity”, the museologist asks: “Faced with the unforeseen that characterizes our daily lives, what place for museums? future generations”.

“Museums convene, still promote learning, provide sensations, enhance experiences”, adds the director of the Museum-Library of Casa de Bragança, returning to the theme chosen this year for the — “The Power of Museums” – – which, in his view, “lies in the ability to guarantee inclusive spaces, for dialogue and promotion of active citizenship, but also spaces for well-being and enjoyment”.

Maria de Jesus Monge also mentions, in the text, that, on today’s date, museum professionals from all over the world “search for the best and most appealing things they can offer their audiences”, on a day of celebration and celebration, “a showcase of that has been carried out, and the seed of other initiatives”.

On the other hand, the president of ICOM-Portugal mentions the difficult situation of professionals in the sector in Ukraine and Poland, to whom she is associated today through the ICOM national committees of these countries, in an ´online´ initiative, jointly with ICOM Europe, to get to know the experiences in these countries better and understand how the reality is useful”.

This year, the theme proposed by ICOM, promoter of the event worldwide, aims to demonstrate the positive effect of these cultural spaces, in a changing world, when the political and social impact of the war in Ukraine joins the effects of the covid pandemic – 19.
