Covid, two new sub-variants discovered in Veneto: in Venice and Padua
MESTRE / PADUA – Two new ones subvariants of the Sars-Cov2 virus were identified a few days ago in Veneto thanks to the sequencing of the genetics laboratory ofAngelo hospital in Mestre and the laboratories of the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of the Venezie (IZSVe). These are two viruses discovered in the provinces of Venice and Paduathat I present different genetic characteristics.
Two new sub-variants discovered in Veneto
The sub-variant of Venice
The one identified in the Venetian is similar to the recombinants BA.1.1 BA.2, and called “XM”, in several European countries such as GGermany, Denmark, Croatia, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, England and Scotland. However, it differs from these for some mutations characteristics: the Spike protein possesses the typical sequence of the BA.2 lineage, but is distinguished by the absence of a peculiar mutation, and by the acquisition of the mutation present in only 59 other viruses globally, none of these in Italy.
The sub-variant of Padua
The second possible sub-variant – in jargon – recombinant BA.1 BA.2 – has been identified in the province of Padua, and this too it is not similar to any other virus previously identified in Veneto.
