The Big Mac is also not immune to inflation around the world.
In a recent study, the insurance broker HelloSafe named Big Mac prices in 71 countries in a bid to rank the most expensive countries around the world. “The Big Mac Index was invented in 1986 and first mentioned in The Economist newspaper. Symbol of the globalization of our lifestyles, the Big Mac has become a meal that can be found in almost all the capitals of the world. Like the pint of beer or the pack of cigarettes, the Big Mac hamburger is one of the most popular products in the world and can therefore serve as a reference. Thus, the price of the different products that make up the Big mac will experience inflation from one country to another and the final price will also vary depending on the region in which we are. A reference symbol, the difference between the most expensive and the least expensive Big Mac thus perfectly demonstrates the greatest economic gaps throughout the world. We thus discover that in first place, we find Switzerland with the most expensive Big Mac in the world at €6.21, against its Russian version, ranked in 71st position and shifted the price by €1.54, i.e. four times cheaper. The Ukrainian conflict does nothing to help this large gap, more and more products likely to be affected by this new inflation. Thus, Big Mac prices are set to increase further.

Belgium currently ranks ninth with a price of €4.40 which should normally increase to €4.83 during the year 2022, an increase of 9.77%. A limit that has never been crossed specifies Hello Safe. Belgium is therefore one of the 13% of the most expensive countries in the world when it comes to the timeless McDonald’s hamburger.
To discover the rest of the ranking, HelloSafe has produced an interactive map with Big Mac prices across the 71 countries referenced. The prices, all converted into euros, were raised in January 2022 according to the exchange rate at the time.
