On Tuesday, the Berlin Senate will discuss the question of whether the city center should soon become largely car-free.

This calls for a citizens’ initiative that wants to push through a corresponding referendum. According to the Berlin Senate Department for the Interior, the draft law that she has presented violates the Basic Law. The Senate must now formulate a position on this and also formally adopt it. This is expected for Tuesday’s session. The transport administration must submit the template for this, which Transport Senator Bettina Jarasch (Greens) wants to assign to her Senate colleagues.
“Public decision Berlin car-free”: car-reduced area within the S-Bahn ring
According to the ideas of the Berlin car-free referendum initiative, almost all streets within the S-Bahn ring should become car-reduced areas. More than 50,000 Berliners signed it last year. The 20,000 votes required for the first stage on the way to the referendum were thus achieved. If the entire Senate agrees with the interior administration, which means IST, there will initially not be a referendum on the issue of the initiative. However, the State Constitutional Court would then have to decide whether there was actually a violation of the Basic Law.
Progress of the school building offensive is presented
Education Senator Astrid-Sabine Busse (SPD) also presented a report to the Senate on how the school building offensive is progressing. The lack of school places, which is expected to increase, has been a constant issue in Berlin in recent years. After the kick-off meeting in the last week of April, the Senate Commission on Housing will meet for the second time immediately after the Senate session. They should control large housing projects across departments and check what is wrong if things do not progress as hoped. The press conference following the Senate session should therefore not begin until 2 p.m. The Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) and Transport Senator Jarasch have announced that they will be there.
