The Minister of the Interior Agni Pilotayde and the Minister of Defense Arvidas Anusukas announced on Wednesday that the permanent military forces are in the most dangerous sections of the Lithuanian-Belarusian border.
The interior minister said threats to national security escalated after a state of emergency was declared on February 25 following Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
“The threats on the Belarusian border have not disappeared or changed, the Belarusian regime is destabilizing the political and public order in the neighboring countries, and a new route for illegal migration has emerged through Russia,” said Bilotaitė.
“So be very vigilant and focus on how to react to that. “During the state of emergency, military assistance is needed to protect the state’s borders,” he continued.
Since the beginning of this year, Lithuania has rejected 1,600 foreigners trying to cross the border. Migration across the border across the border increased after a decrease in registered crossing efforts in the winter.
During emergencies, border controls are strengthened, the right to collect information is restricted, and the visa regime is tightened.
Ministers also discussed the country’s assistance to Ukraine. Bilotaitė Anuszakasky handed over a request for assistance from Ukrainian Interior Minister Denis Monastirski to the war crimes committed by the Russian army, to clear the areas cleared by Russian troops in Ukraine and to provide rehabilitation services to wounded Ukrainian soldiers and law enforcement officers.
