The tax deductions for health insurance premiums are to increase by around 10 percent in the canton of Zurich. On Monday, May 16, 2022, the cantonal council approved the counter-proposal to the SVP’s “Justice Initiative”. The cantonal council rejected the initiative, which aims to increase the deductions significantly more.
The cantonal council clearly approved the counter-proposal in the final vote with 116 to 49 votes, but clearly rejected the initiative itself with a similar 123 to 45 votes.
According to the counter-proposal, single people should be able to deduct 2,900 francs (previously: 2,600 francs) and married people 5,800 francs (5,200 francs). According to estimates, this would result in annual revenue shortfalls of around CHF 45 million for the canton and municipalities.
The popular initiative of the SVP entitled “Create justice – adjust health insurance premium deduction to reality” wants to go much further. She demands 3,600 francs for singles, 7,200 francs for married couples and 1,500 francs for children (previously 1,300 francs).
The SVP announced last year that it did not want to withdraw its initiative. If she sticks with it, those entitled to vote in the canton of Zurich will vote on both the initiative and the counter-proposal. If the initiative is withdrawn, the counter-proposal can come into force without a referendum.
