bridges, roads, parking lots and a park in Termini
The ambitious goal is to fill in 75 percent of the holes on the roads of the capital. And then, more generally, over 650 million euros and just under a thousand days to refurbish new churches and pilgrims’ walkways, build structures to host events for the faithful, pedestrianize the area of San Pietro or create new and old ones. “Unfinished” of the city such as the Ponte dei Congressi, that of Scafa and the urban park around the Termini station. The Capitol has completed the list of infrastructural and maintenance interventions to be sent to Palazzo Chigi, which will be financed with the extraordinary funds for the 2025 Jubilee: for this chapter, in total, we are talking about 29 projects for 656.5 million euros, almost half of the 1.4 billion euros made available by the government for the Holy Year. These are works that Commissioner Roberto Gualtieri wants to start within the year, at least with the calls for proposals for the design. And to aim the bureaucratic machine to use the special powers, which alone can at least half the authorization and start-up times of the works.
Buche Roma, Gualtieri: “For the Jubilee mega maintenance of the roads, the biggest ever”
463 KILOMETERS
With this in mind, the first to open (by the summer) will be the construction sites for extraordinary maintenance on the roads of the major roads (consular in primis) by Anas: the company led by Aldo Isi, also taking advantage of the possibility of entrusting works directly, has 200 million available to rearrange 463 kilometers of streets and squares. Still from the same mountain of resources for the Jubilee, the Capitol will take another 95 million to plug the holes and improve the decor of the streets today under the municipal competence, 15 for the asphalt on the Tiber and 15 for the sidewalks of the whole city. The Anas, then, with another million euros made available by the government and 5 out of pocket, will also redevelop the entrances and exits of the Gra junctions.
The Jubilee, then, could change the face of the area near the Vatican: with one million euros, Via della Conciliazione will be entirely pedestrianized, while in Piazza Risorgimento, with a commitment of 5 million, an underground car park and an underpass will be built which should lead tourists to Vatican museums. Also in the same square will be inhibited to vehicular traffic Piazza Pia (underneath, with 70 million, a tunnel will be built that will connect with that of Gregory VII), will also be pedestrianized via Ottaviano (4 million) and the Gelsomino promenade will be restored at the station of San Pietro (2 million). Thirty million then for a new lighting.
Looking at other places of worship, with 30 million the floors of the Jubilee churches will be redone (such as San Salvatore in Lauro, Santa Maria Maggiore or San Paolo fuori le Mura), with 15 million the square in front of the Basilica of San Giovanni will be restored, 9 million euros to restore the parvises of some suburban churches, 5 million to retrace the paths of pilgrims such as the old Francigena or the streets of San Francesco.
With 48 million in funds for the Holy Year, the Municipality will try to participate in the works of the Congress Bridge, covering the extra costs related to raw materials that have prompted the companies in the sector not to desert the tender launched by the Infrastructure. An integration of 20 million, then, also to build the Scafa Bridge and another million for the Ponte dell’Industria. And again: 12 million to redevelop Piazza dei Cinquecento and Termini station where an urban park will also be set up, 20 million for the new Parco dei Fori and another 20 million for the Tor Vergata events area. With 5 million, the railway stations most used by pilgrims such as those of San Pietro, Ostiense and Porta San Paolo will also be redeveloped.
