Total lunar eclipse on Monday over Austria – Austria-News
Next Monday, May 16th, there will be a real astronomy highlight over Austria. The Viennese can also be happy.
After three years, the time has finally come again: a lunar eclipse will be visible over Vienna. Unfortunately, especially in the east of Austria, you will not be able to fully enjoy the astronomy spectacle. Because when the moon enters the shadow of the earth and gradually darkens deep black, the sun is already rising.
On Monday, May 16, at 3:32 a.m., the first penumbral eclipse begins. The beginning of the partial eclipse is finally at 4:27 am. The lunar eclipse reaches its peak in Vienna with about 70 percent at 5.12 a.m. However, the sun already rises at 5.15 a.m.
Total darkness in the west
But there is good news for the rest of Austria: the further west you go, the more you get out of the blackout. St. Pölten, Graz or Linz is not enough, but you can already enjoy a total lunar eclipse from Salzburg. This begins in Mozart’s birthplace at 5:29 a.m., but the moon sets again at 5:30 a.m.
The people of Innsbruck and especially the people of Vorarlberg are luckier. You will still see a full ten minutes of the total lunar eclipse. Because the sun has already risen at 5.29 a.m., you will probably not see too much of it.
Solar eclipse in October
The next lunar eclipse over Austria with a comparable extent will not occur again until September 2025. Even then it should still be light in the sky, because the maximum will be reached around November 20th.
On October 8th there will be a second lunar eclipse, which will remain completely hidden from Austria. The astronomical highlight par excellence will be the partial solar eclipse on October 25, 2022 at 12:20 p.m. anyway.
