Pros and cons: war of aggression in Europe – how does Austria protect itself?
The Ukraine war challenges Europe’s security policy. Has Austria’s neutrality become obsolete or is it more important than ever right now? This week, a top-class panel will discuss pros and cons with Irmgard Griss, Veit V. Dengler, Christian Stocker and Andreas Schieder, among others.
The war in Ukraine marks a historic turning point in Europe’s post-war order. The EU has so far countered the aggression of Russian President Vladimir Putin with sanctions. Austria also supports this.
The conflict also fuels the neutrality debate in Austria. Well-known personalities around the media manager Veit V. Dengler, the military expert Walter Feichtinger and the writer Julya Rabinowich addressed the federal government in an open letter and demanded a new one security doctrine. “We are united in the conviction that the status quo of our security policy is not only unsustainable, but dangerous for our country,” the statement said.
At the same time, the debate continues – from Germany – which steps could provoke a Russian nuclear strike. In the previous week, Alice Schwarzer had called for an end to arms deliveries to Ukraine in an open letter to the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz with supporters.
Has Austrian neutrality become obsolete? How much does the federal army have to be increased financially? Do we need an EU army and NATO? And how can pacifism be enforced in times of war?
