A women’s Milan-San Remo on the program from the 2023 season?
Women’s cycling is on the rise. Beyond the attraction of the public, more and more present on the side of the roads – which we could still notice during the last Paris-Roubaix Women with Zwift – and the increase in allocations and bonuses for the runners, a prestigious calendar is taking shape. After the creation of Women’s Tour de France with Zwiftincluding the 1st edition will begin on July 24, 2022 facing the Eiffel Tower, this is another good news for the evolution and democratization of women’s cycling that is coming. Paul Bellinthe CEO of the Italian company RCS Sports – which organizes, among other things, the Tour of Italythe Tour of Lombardy and Milan-San Remo – told the press that a women’s edition of the Primavera was under study, starting in 2023.

“It would be the same day as the men and in the same format as Strade Bianche”
The CEO of RCS Sportswhich also organizes since 2015 the Strade Bianche Womenis confident about the integration of Milan-San Remo on the women’s calendar from 2023. “We are working to launch a women’s Milan-San Remo“, he explains in remarks reported by BikeNews. “I think it’s a spring monument that should be as well organized for men as for women. Of course, not over such a long distance but we are already working to open an edition next year. It would be the same day as the men and in the same format as the Strade Bianche women.” he declared during a call to the press.
A rapprochement with the Italian federation for an evolution of the women’s Giro d’Italia?
In addition to creating a Women’s Milan-San Remo, RCS Sports also seeks to get involved in the Women’s Giro d’Italia. The race that has existed since 1988 is owned by the Italian Cycling Federation: “We are talking with the national federation to find out the opportunities to work together. My intention is to define something by June. I think that in the next few months you will have good news regarding this event. We would like to bring it closer to the Giro men’s d’Italia, the women’s calendar is very difficult, but it’s a good opportunity” he said before explaining his approach: “I thought initially that it was better to work with them than to create a new race, especially since the national federation’s race is already on the WorldTour calendar. Now, with the new rules, becoming WorldTour takes a few years […]. I would like to say that the Tour de France has done something incredible (with women, editor’s note). I intend to bring together the men and women of the Giro d’Italia, not on the same days but one after the other” to end Paul Bellin.
